The European Hamster (cricetus cricetus) was first recorded in 1679 and received its name is 1758. European Hamsters are the largest of all hamster species, being similar in size to guinea pigs, measuring up to 10 inches long. They are solitary and aggressive towards other hamsters. They hibernate during the winter months. Their average lifespan is up to 8 years. In Europe, some have considered the European hamster a pest, and it has been trapped for its fur.
European hamsters have been used as laboratory animals, but are not widely available as pets.
